It is essential to find the golden rule for GDM screenings and diagnostic methods for better understanding of this disease. There are several reasons why it is important to continue to conduct epidemiologic studies in the GDM area. First, GDM occurs during the most critical period of a women’s life. Subjects experiencing GDM during pregnancy are at an increased risk for pregnancy- i nduced- hypertension and are at a greater risk for diabetes in later life. Furthermore, numerous epidemiologic studies have confirmed that the offspring of GDM mothers are at a higher risk for birth complications, becoming obese, increasingly at risk for IGT and DM, and are at a higher risk for hypertension. Therefore, it is very important to conduct more and standardized epidemiologic studies for a better understanding of the disease.
