Recent epidemiological studies on the prevalence of DM in the the Arab world came mainly from Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Egypt. The prevalence of DM was estimated to be 9.3% in the Egyptian population of > 20 years. A recent study of urban and rural populations in Saudi Arabia in persons > 15 years old, adds to previously reported alarming figures indicating a prevalence of 12.0% for males and 14.0% for females in the urban and 7.0% for males and 7.7% for females in the rural population (Reference 9).
