Evidence exists showing IDA is related to decreased resistance to infections. The evidence comes from different studies shown association between IDA and impaired immune function, but a cause-effect relationship has not been demonstrated yet.
Work capacity is also described as another consequence of IDA, particularly with values below 100 g/L, and studies in humans have shown decrease performance during exercise. These situations improve after iron supplementation.
Anemia during pregnancy has been related to preterm delivery, low birth weight and fetal death. It is difficult to interpret hemoglobin results during late pregnancy because hemoglobin values decrease due to physiological changes along pregnancy (hemodilution).
