The best results from screening are usually obtained through organized screening programs. Such programs have several major components as outlined in the slide. Quite often screening is offered in an ad hoc fashion, without these organized components. There is interesting data from a natural experiment in the Scandinavian countries which shows that greater mortality reductions from cervical cancer were obtained in countries that had organized programs.
Underlying a good organized screening program is an information system to support its activities.
