There is often confusion between screening and diagnosis. This often happens because the same tests can be used for both purposes. While screening occurs in individuals who are asymptomatic, or not suspected of having the disease in question, diagnosis is used to confirm whether someone actually has a disease. For example, a blood sugar test in someone that is healthy would be a screening test. The same test in someone with symptoms of diabetes would be diagnostic. Most screening tests, when used in healthy people, require follow-up testing for diagnosis.
