Retrospective cohort studies are more typically ones conducted on occupational groups. An example would be workers who were exposed to asbestos in the building of US Navy ships during World War II compared to other workers not so exposed. In the follow up, having cancer was much more common in those exposed to asbestos than in the others, after the frequency of smoking in the two groups was allowed for.
