The development of Type 2 diabetes can be divided into four phases. Genetic susceptibility is a prerequisite for the development of the disease. However, specific genes causing Type 2 diabetes are still unknown. The second stage appears to be the development of insulin resistance. Subsequently, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) develops and finally Type 2 diabetes (DM) appears.
