Obesity and physical inactivity are the major risk factors in Type 2 diabetes. A randomized controlled trial was started in 1986 in DaQing, China to examine the effects of changing diet and physical activity on the development of Type 2 diabetes. 110,660 subjects were screened and IGT subjects were identified. They were randomized to four groups. The first group was given general health advice only. The second group was given specific advice on how to change their diet. They were instructed to decrease intake of fat and calories if obese. The third group was advised to increase in physical activity on a daily basis. The fourth group was given advice on both. All four groups were followed for 6 years.
