Another factor in the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes is breast-feeding. This graph shows the prevalence of diabetes by age group and according to whether the subjects were breast-fed during infancy or not. Overall, breast-feeding exclusively for at least 2 months was associated with a more than 50% reduction in the prevalence of diabetes in young adults after other factors had been taken into account. This finding also demonstrates that factors early in life can have a profound effect on the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes years later.
