Obesity, as reflected by body mass index, is an important determinant of Type 2 diabetes. However, waist-hip ratio (WHR), another parameter for obesity reflecting the distribution of fat deposition, is even more important. Both the distribution and extent of obesity influence the risk of developing diabetes. This study from Gothenburg, Sweden shows the percent of men who developed diabetes over a 13.5 year period according to their waist-hip ratio and BMI at the begining of the period. the men with similar BMI but with greater waist-hip ratios i.e.a more central distribution of fat, have higher risk for Type 2 diabetes.
