The prevalence of diabetes in Japan has increased since 1970’s, but is still lower than in Japanese Americans in Seattle. Comparing the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in men and women between Tokyo and Seattle, we found that based on the same diagnostic criteria for diabetes, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes was 16 - 20% in men and women in Seattle compared to only 4-5% in native Japanese.
