Especially in developing countries, the prevalence of diabetes has increased remarkably in the past 10 years. It has been estimated that diabetes prevalence will increase 200% in developing countries, i.e., China, India etc., soon after we enter the next millennium. In China the prevalence of diabetes has increased from 0.67% (1980) to 3.21% (1996), about 5 times after 15 years, and the number of diabetic patients may exceed 16 million now, and more than 37 million by the year 2025, based on these trends.
