In retrospective studies sampling is done on outcome: the disease or event of interest has already occurred. A group of animals with the outcome of interest and a similar group without the outcome are selected for participation in the study. Clinical records of both groups are obtained and the animals' exposure histories are compared. A case-control study is a retrospective study.
