The data displayed on this and the next slide are from a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association titled “The Value of Service Dogs for People with Severe Ambulatory Disabilities,” Allen K & Blascovich J. 1996. J Amer Med Assoc 275:1001-1006.

This was a randomized, controlled clinical trial conducted to assess the value of service dogs. The study participants were 48 individuals with severe and chronic ambulatory disabilities requiring use of wheelchairs. The participants were matched by age, gender, marital status, and severity of disability to create 24 pairs. Within each pair, participants were randomly assigned to receive either a service dog or to a control group that was put on a one-year waiting list for a service dog.
