The features compare the estimated annual cost in 1990 due to Minamata disease with those for pollution prevention and control measures in the area around Minamata Bay. The real cost of the damage caused by Minamata disease, including health-care subsidies and compensation for lost income, was probably 100 times greaters.

Restoration of the Minamata Bay : This project created 58 ha. of landfill area at a total cost of about 48 billion yen. Of this total, Chisso Co. Ltd. assumed the burden of 30.5 billion yen.
Compensation to the Fishing Industry : Chisso Co. Ltd. paid 140 million yen in 1959, and 3,930 million yen in 1973-74, to the fishing industry in the area around Minamata Bay as compensation.
