Some inhabitants who ate 300-1500 g/ day with an average mercury concentration of 3-4 Mg/ g suffered poisoning. The duration of intake was presumed to be at least 30 days in the area around Agano River, i.e., there was some possibility that a person who ate contaminated fish with a total mercury content of 1 mg or 0.5 mg methylmercury may have contracted the disease.
