Mercury and its compounds have been used by man in a wide variety of ways. The largest users have been chlor-alkali industry. The second greatest consumption of mercury occurs in the production of electrical apparatus.
WHO has warned against the use of alkylmercury compounds in seed dressing (WHO, 1976). Methylmercury compounds are still used in laboratory-based research, and so the possibility of occupational exposures remains (Junghans, 1983).
