More than 150 infections are recognized as zoonotic. The transmission of infectious agents from animals to humans results in significant mortality and morbidity. National and international surveillance systems have been established to monitor zoonotic diseases and to characterize their pattern by person, place, and time. Early recognition of epidemics of a zoonotic disease is important for its control.
