Folic acid supplementation is known to prevent the sib recurrence of neural tube defects, and a ten fold larger dose (4 mg daily) is indicated for women that already mothered a baby with anencephaly or spina bifida. Folic acid supplementation is also known to prevent the occurrence of several types of birth defects. Thus, perinatal health promotion projects should include such supplementation.
