Routine basic prenatal care may prevent many causes of birth defects by means of adequate control and treatment of maternal illnesses affecting 1/10 pregnant women. Prenatal care does not need to include advanced technology and it can be provided by paramedical professionals. Weight and blood pressure control, uterine height, and eventual testing of sugar and protein in urine are enough for the prevention, early diagnosis and satisfactory treatment of most maternal diseases.
