Plasmodia must go through their sexual cycle, which lasts some 10-15 days. There is no transovarian* transmission of malaria, and therefore the new adult mosquitoes are free of this disease.

*Transovarian transmission of the agents of some rickettsial diseases does occur in their arachnid vectors (ticks and chiggers): infected adults infect their eggs >> new larvae and the adults (both hematophagous) are infectious!
