Molecular epidemiology is based on general epidemiology and utilizes the same designs (i.e., case-control and cohort studies) as those employed by general epidemiology.
However, molecular epidemiology utilizes molecular biology to define the distribution of disease in a population (i.e., descriptive epidemiology) and identify its potential etiologic determinants (i.e., analytical epidemiology).
