Since subjects recalled their training characteristics and injury history for at least 10 years prior to the survey, we selected 2 recall periods to investigate long- and short-term risk factors. The first time period included those subjects who participated in a RWJ program for at least 1 of the previous 5 years prior to the survey (1981-85). We used this analysis to investigate time dependent variables such as training mileage, pace and frequency over a 5-year period. The second recall period was the 12 months immediately preceding the mailed survey (1985). We did this for 2 reasons, 1) we felt recall would be best for this time period and 2) there were additional risk factors available for this time period.
