The third type of surveillance performance indicator focuses on assessing the thoroughness and appropriateness of case investigations. In the case for AFP and measles surveillance, the performance indicators define more specifically the appropriate amounts, types, and time periods in which laboratory specimens should be collected from suspected cases in order to ensure the highest likelihood that the source of infection can be thoroughly investigated and identified.
