Data on typhoid fever cases reported to CDC from 1985 through 1994 are typical of this third period.  There were few cases, less than 2,500 in the 10-year period and only 10 deaths.  Seventy-two percent of cases reported international travel in the 30 days before illness onset, and six countries, Mexico, India, the Philippines, Pakistan, El Salvador, and Haiti accounted for 80% of travel-associated cases.
