But attribution alone is not sufficient to explain drug use. So why do people take drugs? For the simple reason that it makes them feel good, it is enjoyable, for some it is one of the few pleasures they have, it provides escape for others. Social cues (advertising, role models, peer pressure, cool) encourage shared drug use for social purposes. Addiction provides a justification for continued occupation of a dependency role. Financial and criminal elements of the illicit trade in goods maintained by the legislative controls on certain drugs fuels fear of the drugs themselves, while massive advertising and revenues are obtained from tobacco and alcohol by both corporations and governments. All of these elements conspire to combine into the role of addiction.
