Attributional theory is a theory of how people attribute explanations for the way the world is. The addition model has as its premise: Drug use => addict, whereas attribution theory turns this around, stating, if society (and I myself) label me as an addict, then this means I can’t help taking drugs, and dictates the role I should adopt, how I should behave, and the distain with which I and others should view myself. I am therefore a victim of drugs. The result of this perspective is that the person then adopts a role of dependency on drugs and explains to his/her self their deviant behaviour as resulting from addition. So, the concept of addiction can become a cause of dependency.
