First Hour Exam

Note: drawings are acceptable and may even be helpful!

You can take the entire period or leave whenever you are finished. In my experience, a good answer will take at least ten well illustrated and well written pages or something more than an hour of drawing and writing.

Please use pencil drawings as much as possible, but write with a dark ball point pen, and write on every other line if you tend to have small handwriting. Please leave wide margins if you would like me to comment on your answer. If you don't, I'll assume that you are not interested in my comments and won't force them upon you.

The Questions:

Please answer either of the following questions but not both and indicate which question you are answering with the letter A or B and the tissue you have chosen to discuss on the cover page along with your name and today's date. Your answer must refer to one of the five tissues (epithelia, connective, blood, muscle, nerve).

A) What tissue do you find most interesting? Please explain.

B) What tissue do you find least interesting? Please explain.

Points to Cover:

In answering either question, you might consider

(1)  the general characteristics shared by tissues and

(2)  the specific characteristics that make one tissue different from another.

Evaluation and Grading:

I am curious about your opinion of tissues, but your grade will not be based on opinion. Your grade will be based on how well you have described the tissue you have chosen, drawn cogent comparisons, and made apt contrasts. Beyond these specifics, your grade will be inversely proportional to major errors. Spelling will not count as long as I can figure out your intention, but correct spelling and attention to grammar always improve clarity, and clarity helps me understand your answer.

Second Hour Exam:

The Histology of the Integument, Circulatory, Immune and Lymphoid Systems, Hematopoiesis (Bone Marrow), Skeletal, Respiratory, and Digestive Systems

Please give your name and today's date on the cover page along with the organ or system you have chosen to discuss.

If your margins are narrow, I'll assume that you are not interested in my comments and won't force them upon you. A word to the wise: drawings are acceptable and may even be helpful!

The Question:

How are each of the five tissues studied in the first part of the course (epithelial, connective, blood, muscle and nerve) represented in one of the organs or systems studied in the second part of the course (integument, circulatory, immune and lymphoid systems, hematopoiesis (bone marrow), skeletal, respiratory, and digestive systems)?

Note: answers of the sort, 'I don't know!'are not acceptable.

Your answer must refer to each of the five tissues but you may indicate that a particular tissue is not present in the organ or system under consideration.

Note: it may be necessary to discuss a tissue in more than one context.
Note: structure and function are related to each other, but tissue dynamics are also related to both structure and function.

Evaluation and Grading:

Your grade will be based on how well you have described the tissues in the organ or system you have chosen, used the language of histology, and drawn attention to the associations of structure, dynamics and function. Beyond these specifics, your grade will be inversely proportional to major errors. Spelling will not count as long as I can figure out your intention, but correct spelling and attention to grammar always improve clarity, and clarity helps me understand your answer.

Final Exam

Note: drawings are acceptable and may even be helpful!

You can take the entire period or leave whenever you are finished. In my experience, good answers require at least twelve well illustrated and well written pages and take something more than an hour and a half of effort. Please render  drawings  in pencil, but write with a dark ball point pen, and write on every other line if you tend to have small handwriting.

The Questions:

Please answer two  (2) of the three questions dividing your time equally between the two answers.

A) How is blood pressure regulated by the urinary/endocrine axis?

B) How does the endocrine system regulate the reproductive system (either male or female)?

C) How does nervous tissue interact with other tissue in the organism (epithelia, connective, blood, muscle)?.

Of course, I am curious about your opinions, but your grade will not be based on opinion. Your grade will be based on how well you have described tissues, their regulation and interactions. Your answers should draw cogent comparisons, apt contrasts, and contain abundant specifics. Your grade will also be inversely proportional to major errors. Spelling will not count as long as I can figure out your intention, but correct spelling and attention to grammar always improve clarity, and clarity helps me understand your answers.
