ENGR 0715: Engineering Applications for Society

My name is Stephanie Paige O'Neill and I am from Beaver, Pennsylvania, a suburb North of Pittsburgh. I went to Beaver Area High school where
I enjoyed playing soccer all year and teaching piano lessons as my part-time job. I love the atmosphere of Oakland as a college campus and all the city of Pittsburgh has to offer,
which is why I decided to come to Pitt! In my free time, I especially enjoy pick-up games of soccer, watching movies, and shopping in the city. I love to travel, and am hoping on attending the World Cup 2010 in South Africa, a once in a life-time oppurtunity!
I became interested in Civil & Environmental Engineering because I am fascinated by the design process of buildings and structures, and hope to soon be involved in designing
and constructing more sustainable city buildings. This summer, I hope to gain acceptance into the "Research Experience for Undergraduates" - part of Pitt's Mascaro Sustainability Initiative -
so that I can gain valuable knowledge in my field, even as a freshman. I'm excited to be part of this year's Engineering Aplications for Society, and looking forward to another challenging semester!
Team Project: Redesigning Local Health Clinic Space
Located in nearby South Oakland, the Lawn Street health clinic facility would like
to update and improve the layout of their facility, while also improving aesthetics. Especially important is the placement of employee workspace,
which needs to be more appropriately partitioned from the patient waiting area. Also, storage has become an overwhelming problem, as filing
cabinets take up valuable wall space. Our goal is to create a more practical, organized, and professional health clinic for the people of South Oakland.
CHSC is located on Lawn Street in the South Oakland neighborhood. It's fundamental mission is the revitalization of the Oakland neighborhoods which it works towards by providing a variety of neighborhood services. These services not only aim to assist local youth, families, and the homeless, but also serve to forge relationships and lines of communitcation between long time residents and newer residents affiliated with the universities.
