BATTERY B
First Pennsylvania Light Artillery P.R.V.C.
(from the Mt. Jackson Sesquicentennial 1815-1965)
In the decade preceding the outbreak of the Civil War, there had been a growing tension between the Northern and Southern states, a tension, which reached the breaking point soon after Lincoln's nomination in 1860. On December 20, 1861, South Carolina passed an ordinance of secession, and by the day of Lincoln's inaugural, five more states had seceded, and the Confederate States of American had been established. Every attempt at conciliation was made, but on April 12th, forces of the Confederate States fired on Fort Sumpter, and war could no longer be avoided.
Battery B Monument, Mt. Jackson, Pa.
On April 22nd a meeting was held at Mr. Jackson, where plans were rapidly drawn up for a unit to be known as the "Mt. Jackson Guards." The following day circulars were posted throughout the County calling for enrollment, and on April 26th the battery was formally organized, with H. T. Danforth, who had served with the U.S. Army, Lt. Colonel during the Mexican War, as Captain. The following is a list of the men who served with Battery B, First Regiment Light Artillery, P.R.V.C. taken from the Military Register.
