SENECA ROCKS, WEST VIRGINIA

Seneca Rocks is a small town located in West Virginia, about 4 hours away from Pittsburgh. Every year the Pitt Outdoors Club makes two trips down to spend the weekend doing a wide assortment of activities ranging from top roping, multi-pitching, hiking, and caving. This is the one trip that we are able to encorporate everything that we do, and give everyone a chance to spend time with, and make, new friends.

If we are lucky, we pick the same weekend as the town's Annual Chili Cook-off, and are able to enjoy a wide array of chili's made by locals or climbers that have come to enjoy this beautiful scene. We also make our own chili for the celebration. On these weekends, the town lights up and they have people come in and show slides or videos about an intense climb they just recently came back from, and they have bands play on a mini-stage across the street from the restaurant.

Because Seneca is our traditional "Graduation Climb", there are a few things that you must do before you are able to go on this trip.

  • If you are planning on climbing at all in Seneca, you must have completed at least three climbs with the club.
  • If you have never been multi-pitching before, and you plan on doing so at Seneca, you MUST attend the Multi-Pitch class. It will be held on Sunday, October 8.
  • If you plan on caving, you must have gone caving at least once with the club.
  • You must COMPLETELY fill out the Online Registration Form.
  • You must be an ACTIVE member of the Pitt Outdoors Club, this means being paid up on your dues, and having signed the University's waiver form.

If you do plan on going, and you plan on driving yourself, here are directions on how to get there.

If you have never been to Seneca before, you might want to go through this Checklist to ensure you have everything you need. If you do not have something, please let the officers know prior to the trip so they will be able to bring extra gear for you to use. PLEASE NOTE: YOU ARE STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CAMPING GEAR THAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE, THIS INCLUDES TENTS, SLEEPING BAGS, AND PADS. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THESE THINGS, YOU CAN SIGN THEM OUT WITH THE GEARMASTERS DURING THEIR STORAGE OFFICE HOURS.

We have a new Seneca Gear Policy.
