Pitt Ultimate is returning every player from the Nationals qualifying team. With hard
word and a strong recruiting class we hope En Sabah Nur will return to the national
stage for a second year and make a deep run at nationals.

This game gave our rookies a first taste of what competitive Ultimate is all about. They also had a chance to witness what level of play then can expect to achieve when the veterans took the field to play a half.

Game 1: Carnegie Mellon Veterans (Win 8-4)
The day started with a veterans half so that we could give all the rookies in attendance a quick glimpse of the level of play they can expect to see in the coming months. For Pitt, the game started off slow. We played down to their level and it really took a few points trading back and fourth before we could find our rhythm. With the score 5-4 Pitt turned it up on all sides of the disc and took total control of the game. After that we never looked back, the veterans finished strong and secured the victory at 8-4.
Game 2: Carnegie Mellon Rookies (Win 13-4)
The Pitt v. CMU rookie game has turned into a great event for our program. It provides
our recruits with a culminating event to five days filled with 15 hours of practice to learn the game during the first week of classes. This year's crop of rooks is probably the strongest group we have ever had, and they showed it on Saturday. CMU got the first goal of the game getting a break against our O-line. After we worked out a bit of the jitters, our O-line marched down the field to tie the game and get our defense on the field. Then our athleticism took over the game. We played suffocating defense and were able to grind out goals on offense. There were too many great plays to name, but if you look at the picture taken afterwards, players wearing the black Sabah Jerseys got them after making a sweet play. This kicks off what could be the beginning of a very special year for everyone, and a very special college ultimate career for many of these young athletes.
Pitt didn't have to travel far this year for our first "real" tournament of the fall
season. Due to a second location in the Philly area the division 2 bracket in Pittsburgh didn't draw as many college teams as in previous years. However, there was good competition for the day consisting of few high school programs, CMU, and Penn State. Due to sheer numbers Pitt, broke up into two teams captained by Nick Kaczmarek and Rich "Fraggle" Coker along with a handful of veterans and a ton of our rookies. After the day was over Pitt finished in 1st and 2nd place. Highlights include: huge wins over both CMU teams, as well as a retaliation defeat of Penn State in the wee hours of the afternoon. With an overall record of 7-2 it proves that our rookie class continues to perform beyond expectations. They are shaping up to be one of, if not the best, recruiting groups Pitt Ultimate has seen.

Due to sheer numbers Pitt Ultimate sent a total of 3 teams to the annual Skylander tournament in Edinboro. Such a drastic shift from last year where, because of circumstance, we were lucky to field 7. When all the dust settled we finished in 1st, 2nd, and 5th.

(Team E) Ithaca B (Win 13-0)
Our first game was against an inexperienced team that had trouble with the wind. We rolled to the victory, with rookie Matt McCabe making a sick endzone layout bid to preserve the shutout. Afterward they recited a haiku, and TallE returned the favor NYNY style.
(Team E) Pittsburgh S (Win 13-7)
We knew we would need everything we had to beat our own teammates, and we responded well. Our man-to-man defense was very stingy, with the bids coming all over the place. Rookie Pat Hammonds had several nice blocks. Our defense propelled us to an early lead, and our offense was efficient enough to hang on for the day's biggest win.
(Team E) Allegheny (Win 13-2)
Allegheny had a bye the previous round so they were treated to the Pitt v. Pitt showdown. After seeing our intensity, one Allegheny player was heard commenting that they did not want to play us. We took it to them earlier and often, with their only goals coming late in the game. (By the way, congrats to Edinboro for spelling "Allegheny" correctly in the tournament program. They did, however, mislabel the cap rules, much to Bob Koca's chagrin.)
(Team E) Grove City College (Win 13-6)
This was the first time we've faced this team. It is always good to see new West Penn teams, and Grove City was impressive for how young they were.
(Team E) FNA (Win 13-2)
Friends aNd Alumni have a lot of players who remember when Edinboro used to beat Pitt. We were fired up to show them it ain't like that no more. FNA liked to talk the big talk, but their on-field performance wasn't quite up to it. Their biggest mistake was trying to throw the disc, as 3rd year veteran Rob Dulabon got the D almost every time they tried.
(Team E) Edinboro (Win 12-11)
Sunday morning always counts big time. This week it was no different, the winner of this match would take the pool and move into the semifinals. We started inauspiciously, giving them an upwind break to start the game. We recovered and eventually gained a two goal lead. Our offense was very shaky this game, and we simply game them the disc too many times, costing us a chance to put them away. We were up 9-7 when a late game slide gave Edinboro the lead for the first time since very early. We tied it at 10s and then 11s to make it double game point. Edinboro had a chance to win it, but their receiver couldn't come down with it in the back of the endzone (all of Edinboro's goals were on away cuts in this game.) We then marched it calmly (not really) upwind for the game winner, John Johnson to Tony Oliva.
(Team E) Love Bomb (Win 12-11)
Lovebomb is at the Pittsburgh mixed team. We stepped out to an early lead in this one. Up 9-3 we opened up our rotation. Lovebomb took advantage and started to make a run. Even our trusty veterans started looking like rookies. They tied it up at 11s before we were able to stop the bleeding. We buckled down for the next two and moved on to finals.
(Team E) Finals: Pittsburgh N (Loss 15-3)
Skylander V would have an all-Pittsburgh final. (Though rumor has it that if Edinboro-Alum Ross Markle were TD, he would have cancelled the tournament rather than let us play.) This game turned into a Rookie v. Rookie slugfest. Pittsburgh N turned up on top for the victory.
(Team S) Edinboro (Loss 11-10)
We opened pool play on Saturday by drawing the tournament hosts. Pitt had trouble with the wind all through the game and Edinboro was able to run up the score on us by getting a few short field goals and grabbing a couple lucky second chance grabs. We showed our determination and came back on them near the end. Unfortunately the hard cap horn went off while we were still down by 2, so even though we scored the last point, Edinboro was able to pussy out and declare a much undeserved victory.
(Team S) Grove City College (Win 10-8)
After losing such a close game in the last round, everyone on the team was frustrated
and ready to roll the next team that we played. Unfortunately though, Grove City was
not ready to lose so easily. Apparently these guys are a new ultimate team (from
TallE's write-up) but they certainly didn't play like they were. We gave up a lot of easy points on defense, and the wind still was still causing us trouble on offense, and Grove City proved that they may one day be a great team in the western penn section. GC stayed with us the entire game until the very end when Pitt locked it down on offense and scored the last 2 points to seal the victory.
(Team S) Pittsburgh E (Loss 11-7)
We played our best ultimate of the day in this game, but unfortunately lost at the hands of another Pitt team.
(Team S) Ithaca B (Wing 13-3)
After coming off our bye we played a very young Ithaca B team. The rookies got in
a lot of points in this game and everyone on the field seemed to be having a lot
of fun during the game. After the game Ithaca recited a poem that they made up. It
did not have rhythm, we clapped, and then they left.
(Team S) FNA (Win 13-6)
FNA 13-6?? Win
After a shaky start in Saturday pool play, we turned it around on Sunday and showed what kind of team we really were. It felt good to finally turn it around, and the victory just so happened to come against the Edinboro alumni, which made it all the more sweeter.
(Team S) 5th Place: SUNY Buffalo (Win 13-7)
We continued to perform well on Sunday, unfortunately due to a poorly designed tournament bracket, the best Pitt E could play for was 5th place. The rookies played the majority of the points in these two games and proved that we could win on the field. We made sure to finish Buffalo off fast in the finals so we could watch the heated Pitt vs. Pitt final.
In the spring Ohio State will play host to this years College Championship. In the fall it becomes a gathering of 32 teams all coming to test the waters of the competition from across regions. Pitt Ultimate would send two teams to compete to give everyone a ton of playing time and to get experience in what would soon become the A and B teams for the fall. Team X would have a good showing taking 3rd place.

Homecoming weekend affords us the opportunity to play host to returning players. Pitt Ultimate has a great group of Alumni and it is great to welcome them back to Pitt and back on the field with En Sabah Nur.
Delaware played host to 32 teams mostly originating from the Metro-East. A great
opportunity to test the waters of regional competition. Pitt A ended the weekend in 4th place overall.

The B team ventured down to Durham, NC to see some southern
competition. Even with
a traveling issue this turned out to be a great weekend. The format was a little
strange in bracket play seeing as after pool play Pitt B was the #1 seed in one
pool and Georgia College & State was the #1 in the other and we
meet in semi-finals. It gave Appalachian State the #2 seed in
our pool a much easier run through elimination play. On the
bright side we were able to go down there and basically roll
thru teams most of the day. The Georgia College and State game
was really a finals match-up (especially seeing the intensity the defense brought to the table in the second half), it really spoke a lot about the character and heart of this team. It will be an exciting Spring.

Pool Play Recap (5-0)
Both the O and D lines were playing really intense. There were
a lot of huge plays on both sides of the disc. The offense was
firing on all cylinders and we were 1 or 2 turns away from a 100% scoring ration when receiving the pull. The Defense just kept getting better and better as the day wore on. There was a concern that we would come out flat after a long drive through the night. But the 8 hour trip and lack of sleep had no effect on our play. We were able to dictate the flow of the games from the early stages.
Semi-Finals: Georgia State and College (Loss 12-10)
This was simply an amazing game. We came out really slow
(especially our O line) and basically gave them the lead at
half 7-4. We started on D in the second half where the
converted quickly making the game 8-4. Georgia threw zone and
we worked it up the field but made poor decisions on the goal
line and they scored one more time on our O line bringing the count up to 9-4. The offense got their act together and was able to slice through the zone putting our D line back on the field down 9-5. The D line then went mad crazy and just played sick ultimate going on a 5-0 run taking the lead at 10-9. Georgia managed to score one ending the scoring streak and brought the score up to 10 all. A miscue on offense gave Georgia the lead at 11-10. The cap went on making it a game to 12. Unfortunately, we were unable to mount another comeback and they finished the game 12-10.
Classic City Classic is one of the most competitive fall tournament for college teams. Three of the last 6 Open winners at CCC have gone on to win Nationals. This tournament is a great chance to match up against the nations best ultimate programs. It is a great chance for the A team to highlight the good and bad things before heading into the long winter months. Pitt fielded a very rookie heavy team and was missing 3 of our top players and we finished a respectable 10 out of 24.

Arkansas (Win 10-9)
This was our first game of the tournament. With the cold air
and frost on the ground, we came out flat to start the game. This game was kind of sloppy, and very close the entire time. Numerous drops occurred due to focus errors. On universe point, Josh decided to huck a laser downfield. The pass was incomplete, but we got the turn and scored the goal to win the game.
Wisconsin (Loss 11-5)
Determined not to come out as flat as we had against Arkansas,
Pitt picked up its play against Wisconsin. We held with them throughout the first half and traded points for most of it. Wisconsin took half 6-3. In the second half, Wisconsin threw a zone that smothered our offense. That, along with our inability to get turns on D, led to Wisconsin's win over us by 6. Overall, we played much better against Wisconsin than Arkansas.
Univ. of North Carolina (Winn 11-4)
Determined not to let our loss to Wisconsin faze us, we came out strong against UNC. Both the O line and D line picked up their play in this game. O line played only two points in each half because the D line produced break after break against UNC. UNC eventually put rookie lines in because the game had become hopeless. Pitt took the game 11 to 4.
Ohio State (Loss 10-8)
The first time that we had played OSU this season, we had beaten them pretty badly at their own tournament. We knew that they were going to have a better team with them at this tournament and tried to prepare for the game with that in mind. This game was very hard fought, with very few breaks from either D line. OSU managed to pull off two breaks against our O line, which our D line wasn't able to pick up. The hard cap went off with the game at 9-8 in OSU's favor. OSU scored the final goal and won 10-8.
Georgia Tech (Win 11-7)
Our last game of the day turned out to be one of the best. We came out hard and took it to Georgia Tech. The game was relatively close for the most part, until the D line made some huge runs against GT's offense. Very solid game, with a ballsy throw from Zach Borne on game point to help Pitt to the win.

Edinboro (Win 15-13)
The game began with Pitt pulling to Edinboro, and in 4 passes, though nearly stopped by Evan Jenkins; Boro scored the first point of the game. On the Boro pull, a zone was thrown at the Pitt offense, but Mike Lo hucked it to Stu, who was fouled in the end zone, earning Pitt their first point. On the next point, Boro tried a couple hucks to get the point, but after a turn, and a quick run; Pat Hammonds got the point. On Boro's next run, they were conquered by Pitt's man defense, dropping the disc after just their second pass. Pitt then pulled a ho-stack, there was a turnover, and Boro didn't manage to get the disc to the goal line, until a foul was called, giving them an easy one-throw goal from there. On Pitt's next run, Josh got a huck to Stu, who then got the disc to Brad for another score. Then, Josh got a D on Edinboro's next run, and Brandon picked it up for an easy pass to McCabe. Boro's next play was yet another huck, but it was dropped in the end zone. Then Pitt turned it over, Edinboro got it back, and Brandon got a nice D on them. After a few passes Boro called a travel, slowing Pitt's progress, but it wasn't enough, and Brandon threw to Neupauer for the Point. Boro went for another huck-goal, but their man was fouled on the goal line, and an easy goal. On Pitt's next point, Stu hucked the disc to Wes for a quick goal. Edinboro scored their next goal after a bogus foul was called. Pitt then got the disc and turned it over, and Boro got another huck goal. Then Wes throws it to Jake for a quick goal. On Boro's final run of the half, they gained little yardage before dropping it for an easy pass from Josh to Jake for the Goal. The score at half Pitt 7, Edinboro 6. To start the second half, Wes had a nice throw to Neupauer for a quick goal. Pitt then threw their zone defense at Boro, but it was broken by a cross-field hammer, and a huck for the goal. Edinboro then got a D on Pitt, giving them the disc near the goal-line, giving them another easy one pass goal. Boro then threw another zone at Pitt, but were continually broken, with a goal from Stu to McCabe. Then Boro broke Pitt's zone again for another huck-goal. Stu then threw a huck to Josh, giving Pitt the disc on the goal-line, so they called a time out. Once the game restarted, Then Pitt got the goal, for their 11th point. Boro then ran the disc down field, getting their 10th point. Boro then D'ed Pitt, and went for another huck-goal, but over shot their man, turning the disc over. Pitt then threw another huck, which was hit out of bounds by a Boro player. Boro had another huck and Mike Lo D'ed it. Stu then got a good throw to Mike Lo for the Goal. Then, after another Boro turnover, a throw from Blake to Pat got Pitt their 13th point. After a lot of turnovers, and an amazing D by Josh, Boro threw a hammer for a point. Then Boro took the disc after a turnover, and scored. Pitt then got a quick goal with Wes hucking to Josh; And Boro got their final goal after that with another huck. To end the game, Wes threw the disc to Fraggle. Final score Pitt 15, Edinboro 13.

24 teams converged in Charlotte, NC for the A teams first spring tournament. Unfortunately inclement weather forced the tournament onto backup fields that were less than ideal.

North Carolina State (Loss 11-7)
The game was on the mini-field, but since it had stopped raining and both teams played mostly man, it resembled actual ultimate. We spot them four; then decide to play. Half at 7-3. Get to within two, and have a few scoring chances cut the deficit to one, but fail. Cap on at 10-7; get broken to lose the game 11-7.
Tennessee (Win 13-3)
Last year we were pretty evenly matched. They are not as strong this year, but it was still a nice victory for us. Zone offense got to forget about the horrors of Saturday, looking excellent on a 35 yard field. Tennessee packed it in during the second half as we rolled to a 13-3 win in pre-quarters.
Georgia (Loss 10-6)
A familiar story. Down 5-0, half at 7-2, play a little better, game at 10-6.
A last minute cancellation opened up a spot at Hellfish Bonanza for Pitt A. Aside from a universe point win over Ohio State the weekend didn't provide very tough competition and Pitt walked away with a tournament win.

Brown B (Win 15-5)
It's safe to say that this B team would not win the Metro East. We have yet to play Stanford B, so the question is still out there. On a serious note, these guys are quite disciplined for a B team. It was a pleasure to watch them march upwind against Edinboro, knocking them into the Chumpionship bracket.
Ohio State (Win 11-10)
Defense started by getting a break, but we gave them two right back before we got ourselves in order. Defense kept up the pressure, and we took half at 8-5. We got the O point to start the second half and looked to have the game well under control. Unfortunately we have an awful stretch and refuse to score. Tied at 9s; universe O point at 10s. We turn it on a huck that was eaten by the wind, but we get it back on a layout d and punch it in for the win.
Ohio (Win 15-8)
It was sunny and a little less cold than the morning, but still quite windy.
We gave up an early upwinder, but got it back. In a potential momentum-changing play, Ohio got an upwind Callahan break. On the ensuing upwind offensive point (and only for this one point) the wind increased dramatically. The wind pushed flicks over, so that after ten yards the disc was vertical. We managed to complete enough short passes to march it in for the score. This was the defining moment of the game; Ohio never threatened again. Our defense broke going downwind to get us back on serve, and we took half 8-7. We started the second half with an upwind break and never looked back, outscoring them 7-1.

Due to a tournament cancellation back in February this was Pitt B's first opportunity for some real competition. This was a tournament to get experience for many players and to see the top players on the team step up into leading roles so in many games we subbed for PT rather than for the win. Even though the score doesn't show it the highlight of the weekend was an intense victory over a full strength Michigan B on Sunday.

Saturday Pool Play (1-3)
The first two games on Saturday went to universe point which was a very exciting way to start the B team's first tournament of the Spring season. The game against Eastern Michigan was close for most of the game, but they were just able to win that last point. We went up big early against Michigan B, but unfortunately after players started to get subbed in to get playing time Michigan B began to creep back into the game. They brought the game to universe point scoring 2 or 3 break points in a row. Our universe line was able to bounce back from the Eastern Michigan loss and get the win. Penn was by far our toughest game of the day. While we did lose the game, we kept the score close the entire way. We learned more about our team as a whole in this one game then in all our previous matches. Our last game on Saturday was played nearly entirely by the 2nd string O and D lines, since they did not get a chance to play as much in the game against Penn and there was no longer any way for us to win the pool. This was another good learning experience for the 2nd string guys. While we could have won had we played at full strength, our 2nd string kept it close during the first half, but eventually Western Michigan pulled away in the final half.
Sunday Elimination (2-0)
Toledo was made up primarily of rookie players and the game was one sided from the start. This time around Michigan B was at full strength combining their two squads from Saturday. The final score of the game doesn't do justice to the intensity both teams brought to the field. To keep the game firmly in our grasp we had to battle for every point. They threw a new type of defense at us for most of the game. Its set-up was similar to a Ho-stack defense with man defense on dump and disc, 1 Defender poaching the down field throwing lanes, and 4 defenders down field playing defense on the cutters. It took us a little while to get used to, but after we did, we were able to run up the score. This was a huge win for us considering the strength of Michigan A. This game
Overall, it wasn't exactly what we were looking for, but this being our first tournament of the spring season, the B-team left bowling green feeling satisfied.

Another tournament for playing time and experience for the B team. Due to lack of numbers we picked up 6 players for the weekend. While we didn't get steak, we had a great win over Shippensburg to knock them out of the championship bracket in their home tournament. Our only major loss came from the eventual tournament champions.

The B Team made the short trip up to Edinboro to compete in their Spring Fling replacement tournament. The goal was to iron out the kinks and to get some points against teams we need to beat at sectionals. However, due to teams dropping from the tournament the B team only played a total of 4 games over the entire weekend. Also, a loss to an alumni team brought in last minute to a college tournament messed up our chances making it into the elite bracket and sending us into a much less competitive bracket. It wasn't nearly as productive as intended but it adds fuel to the fire with only two short weeks before sectionals.

Chumpionship Final: Pittsburgh B 13 SUNY-Buffalo 9
The A team moved one step closer to a second Nationals birth by taking first place in the West Penn Sectionals; beating Carnegie-Mellon in the finals 15-7. Pittsburgh B upset Edinboro 15-12 in the 3rd place bracket to battle Bucknell for 3rd place and the final bid to Regionals. Pitt B fell short of a Regionals birth loosing to Bucknell in the 3/4 game 15-6.

Pitt A headed into Metro East Regionals as the number one seed
and the favorite to win the region. Pittsburgh defeated the
University of Rochester, Bucknell, and Maryland on the road to a second appearance in the finals. A universe point loss to Delaware forced Pitt to play in the backdoor game against George Washington. Pittsburgh won the second place game by a score of 15-11, took second place in the region for the second year in a row, and earned its second birth to College Nationals.

Pittsburgh made a second straight appearance at College
Nationals in nearby Columbus, OH. The short 200 mile distance allowed fans from the Burgh to come out in support for En Sabah Nur. In pool play, Pitt was shut out of the championship bracket after two tough looses to Texas and Michigan. Pitt bounced back on Saturday to earn its first win at nationals, beating Harvard in a crossover game 15-12. In the 9th place bracket Pitt had a hard fought 15-10 loss to The Black Tide out of the University of California-Santa Barbara. Pitt ended the tournament with universe point win over Brown, the 2005 Nationals Champion, to take 13th place.
