Makili, a small community approximately 100km NE of Segou, Mali is home to approximately 1400 villagers. Living in some of the worlds poorest conditions, with little chance of earning an income, these generous and warm people don't lack in smiles and want not for laughter. They are aware of their limitations, but mindful of improving their community's future. With the support of the village chief, they have come to EWB in the hopes of building a fish farm which will not only supplement the community's protein deficient diet, but also create micro business opportunities for villagers. Kyle Lotier, the current Peace Corps Volunteer in Makili, applied to EWB-USA on behalf of the villagers in May 2007. EWB-PITT took on this project in October 2007 and is working with the community to make the pond a reality. This past May, a site assessment team consisting of four EWB-PITT student members and two professional engineers traveled to Mali in order to carry out the first phase of our project. Currently, we are using the knowledge gained from this trip to move forward with the projects design and implementation, in the hopes of returning to the community in 2010.
