IE-2004 Database Management Systems (offered each Spring)

Description

Database technology plays a critical role in a knowledge-driven economy. This course will introduce the fundamental aspects of database design and management within the context of a Relational Database Management System (DBMS) environment. Significant time will be spent on the theoretical foundations and technical database concepts. However, the primary focus of this class will be the database development process including analysis, design, implementation, and management of relational database systems.

Course Objectives

  • Learn the fundamental theories of conceptual, logical, and physical database design including: ER data modeling, the relational database model, data integrity, normalization, and optimization.
  • Learn to design and develop database application systems using SQL query language and stored procedures.
  • Learn database management strategies including: Database storage, transaction management, concurrency control, indexing, and database security.
  • Learn an overview of emerging database technologies: Object-Database Systems, Data Warehousing, and XML.

IE-2075 E-Commerce Tools (usually offered in the Summer)

Description

One of the most revolutionary uses of the Internet in recent years has been in the area of e-Commerce. Advances in Internet technologies have revolutionized every aspect of the corporate environment have made it possible for any business organization to enter the global marketplace. This course will approach e-Commerce from two view points: (1) We will examine the common practices and issues involved in e-Commerce, and (2) We will study the major technologies used in building an e-Commerce infrastructure. Special attention will be devoted to programming tools used in the development of e-Commerce Web sites. Learning will take place from readings, class discussions, homework assignments, and involvement in a group project.

Course Objectives

  • Learn the fundamental concepts, practices, and issues of e-Commerce ¢ Learn the technical aspects of developing an e-Commerce Web site
  • Learn common programming tools and techniques used in e-Commerce systems including JavaScript, VBScript
  • Learn to develop a business plan for the development of an e-Commerce activity
  • Understand the wide range of technologies involved in building and operating an e-Commerce practice
