TRAVEL INFORMATION: EC/ASECS 2003

RAIL. Amtrak has a convenient rail station in Greensburg and some convenient trains, so consider taking The Pennsylvanian or The Three Rivers from Philadelphia or Harrisburg to experience the famous Horseshoe Curve near Altoona. Go to www.amtrak.com.

BASIC AUTO DIRECTIONS

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg's campus is 10-12 minutes off the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) in South Greensburg. Official address: 1150 Mount Pleasant Road.

  • Leave the Pennsylvania Turnpike at Exit 8 ("New Stanton"), pay toll, and follow Route 119 North to Greensburg (6 miles).
  • At the intersection of Route 119 and Route 30, turn left at the traffic light, swing over Route 119, and follow Route 30 East (1 mile).
  • Exit right at the sign for Greensburg-Mt. Pleasant Road and turn right after the stop sign.

MASTER DIRECTIONS TO CAMPUS

  • Follow Mount Pleasant Road south for 8/10 mile. The campus will be on your right.
  • There are two ways in. The first entrance (Finoli Drive, stop light, before the fountain) will take you to the parking lot for Millstein Library (Oral/Aural Experience) and Smith Hall (meals, Friday's plenary lecture); the second entrance (Lynch Drive, after the fountain) takes you to the Village Hall (Thursday's plenary panel and all other panels). A purling stream bisects the campus, hence the need for two entrances for cars, but everything is an easy walk from everywhere.
  • Parking: There is a new lot on the hill above Village Hall. Park there on Friday. On Saturday, you can park in the lots near Village Hall if you can find a space. There will be no van on Saturday.

AIR. Those who wish to fly may come into Pittsburgh International airport (PIT), served by US Airways and other airlines. US Airways Express also has flights to Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe (LBE) about 10 miles east of campus. To be honest, it's faster and easier to rent a car at PIT than to take a limousine (why not arrange to share a car with someone?).

DIRECTIONS FROM PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

1. The Direct Route (60 minutes, except during rush hour, when The Simple Route is to be preferred)

  • Exit the airport and follow Route 60 East, which becomes Route 22/30 East and then I-279 (also known as Parkway West). Follow the signs to "Pittsburgh." Do not turn onto I-79.
  • Be in the right-hand lane as you enter the Fort Pitt Tunnel but beware of a right-hand exit-only lane just before the tunnel—avoid that.
  • Go through the tunnel and cross the Fort Pitt Bridge (great view). Still in the right lane, turn sharply at the first exit across the bridge—this takes you along the edge of the Monongahela River onto I-376 (also known as Parkway East). Follow the signs to "Monroeville." The river should be on your right.
  • Follow I-376 East for about 12 miles, through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, to the Monroeville area.
  • Follow signs to the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) and head East (toward Harrisburg) for 14 miles.
  • Exit at #7 ("Irwin"), pay toll, and follow Route 30 East for 9 miles.
  • Exit right at the sign for Greensburg-Mt. Pleasant Road and continue as above ("Master Directions to Campus").

2. The Simple Route (90 minutes, but you don't go near Pittsburgh traffic or the tunnels)

  • Exit the airport and follow Route 60 East, which becomes Route 22/30 East (10 minutes)
  • Take I-79 South to Washington PA (30 minutes)
  • Take I-70 East. Follow signs to "New Stanton" (40 minutes). The road will magically become Route 119 North in New Stanton.
  • Continue as above ("Basic Auto Directions" and then "Master Directions to Campus).

3. The Limousine

  • Allow two hours for the ride. Contact the coordinator.

DIRECTIONS FROM LATROBE AIRPORT

  • Follow Route 30 West past Westmoreland Mall. Take the bypass; do not exit to downtown Greensburg.
  • Exit right at the Greensburg-Mount Pleasant Road.
  • After the stop sign at the foot of ramp, turn left, going under Route 30.
  • Continue as above ("Master Directions to Campus").
