Language and Culture Clubs in the Slavic Department

Many students at the University of Pittsburgh have joined together to promote the study of the languages and cultures of East and Central Europe in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. These language clubs invite all interested parties to contact them and to join them in their activities.

In addition to their separate activities, the language clubs affiliated with the Slavic Department come together once a year to organize an annual Slavic Holiday Night, which features performances by students and instructors of the various Slavic languages as well as guest performers. In the December 1994 holiday performance, students of Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, and Ukrainian contributed to the celebration with songs, dances and dramatical presentations. The evening was rounded out by several captivating dance numbers performed by Slavjane, a Pittsburgh-area Pan-Slavic children's musical and choral group.

At present, the following clubs are active in the Slavic Department:

Service Activities

During the school year 1994-95 the club has planned a volunteer project through Magee-Women's Hospital (Pittsburgh) and Savior's Hospital for Peace and Charity (Moscow). Ten students will be traveling to Moscow in May 1995 to work (on a volunteer basis) in Savior's Hospital for one month. The students, in conjunction with Magee, will be working to improve the health care system for women and children in Russia.

The students of the Russian Club have sold over 30 cases of candy and a large quantity of raffle tickets to raise money towards their Moscow volunteer trip.

The Russian Club sponsors screenings of Russian films on a semi-regular basis. Titles are selected from those in the Hillman Library film collection. The most recent film shown was City Zero.
