INCIDENTAL VOCABULARY ACQUISITION

  Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center

The vocabulary study is directly linked to a large literature in second language acquisition on the relative contributions of implicit and explicit learning (see, for instance, Ellis, 1994; and DeKeyser, 1994). The linguistic/learning phase of the vocabulary portion of the project will involve a replication and extension of Hulstijn et al. (1996). Specifically, the REAP software Carnegie Learning has developed will be employed in analyzing students' robust learning of new words either implicitly (simply through reading online texts) or explicitly (through reading such texts and accessing supplementary lexical information provided online).
