The Student Government Board Diversity Committee and the Political Action Committee of the Black Action Society will be holding a briefing to discuss demographic data of tenured faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. The briefing, which takes place Wednesday 9 April 2008 at 5 pm in Dining Room A of the William Pitt Union, is open to faculty, staff, and students and will address the issue of diversity on campus. University departments that were found to have no tenured faculty of color or female faculty members were issued a "Zero Award" to acknowledge the situation at hand.
This event follows National Take Affirmative Action Day, which was cosponsored by the United States Student Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Youth and College Division, and the leadership conference on Civil Rights Education Fund‘s Student Activist Network on 1 April, 2008.

Student Government Board Members Amanda Reed and Lacee Ecker and Governmental Relations Chairwoman Endia Vereen will be working with students to set up a student assembly and speak-out regarding higher education. The speak-out, which will include students from the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University and other schools in the city of Pittsburgh, will take place 18 April 2008 from 3 pm to 5 pm on the William Pitt Union Lawn. Participants may discuss freely any problems they have encountered in higher education, whether they be diversity, cost, or accessibility and work to develop a strategy to ensure that the issue of higher education is addressed by all presidential candidates during the 2008 election.
While the event will touch on issues that are political in nature, the event is nonpartisan. Information gathered from this event will help the Student Government Board in its upcoming meeting with the United States Student Association‘s National Student Congress.

The Student Government Board is currently looking for applicants for the position of Elections Chair. The Elections Chair is responsible for conducting a fair, honest, and efficient campus-wide election in accordance with the SGB constitution and the elections code, working to inform all of the candidates about the elections process, and helping to regulate campaign procedure. The election is an exciting and stressful time for the candidates, and the Elections Chair is responsible for making sure they can respond to any violations of the elections code. Other duties include arranging and moderating the presidential debate, as well handling the inauguration in the spring term.
Students interested in applying may pick up an application at the Student Government Board Office at 848 William Pitt Union or by visiting the SGB website. The application is due by 5 pm on Friday 28 March.

The University of Pittsburgh Student Government Board in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs is pleased to present An Evening of Blue Stars and Red Carpets, an event developed to recognize individual leaders, advisors, and organizations who have contributed to student life at the University of Pittsburgh. Students, faculty, staff, and organizations may submit nominations to the SGB office in 848 William Pitt Union until 5 pm on Wednesday 12 March 2008. The awards ceremony will take place on the main floor of the William Pitt Union on Sunday 30 March at 7 pm. The application can be found on the SGB website or picked up at the front desk of SGB.

The University of Pittsburgh's Student Government Board will hold a Town Hall Meeting at 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26 in the William Pitt Union Assembly Hall. The meeting will address the needs and concerns of the university's students of color. SGB implores all students to attend the open forum to express the necessary needs of all the students of color on campus.

The Student Government Board committee chairs are looking for students interested in becoming committee members. Students are encouraged to apply for positions on the Governmental Affairs, Public Relations, Freshman Affairs, Environmental, Diversity, Academic Affairs, Traditions, and Judicial committees.

The University of Pittsburgh Student Government Board is pleased to announce the results of the Student Off-Campus Housing Survey. The program, initiated by former board member Alexis Chidi, allowed more than 3000 Pitt students to grade their respective landlords on such criteria as landlord effectiveness and responsiveness, apartment and appliance quality, and exterior conditions. The system employs an A to F scale. At the end of the survey, students were then asked whether or not they would recommend this landlord and asked them to report whether or not they had ever filed a complaint with an external agency towards their landlord. Students can find the link to the website on the SGB homepage.

The University of Pittsburgh Student Government Board is pleased to announce the appointment of the new SGB Committee Chairpersons for the 2008 SGB term. Jonathan Adams was selected to be the new Academic Affairs Chair; Kevin Morrison was selected to be the new Allocations Chair; Shannon Martin was selected to be the new Diversity Chair; Thomas Hudzik was selected to be the new Environmental Chair; Nikolai Condee-Padunov was selected to be the new Public Relations Chair; Trista Polaski was selected to be the new Freshman Affairs Chair; Rafael Colton was selected to be the new Judicial Chair; Jenna Nonnemacher was selected to be the new Traditions Chair; and Endia Vereen was selected to be the new Governmental Relations Chair.
The nominations took place in the SGB Public Meeting on Tuesday 22 January 2008. The Student Government Board wishes to congratulate all new Chairpersons and wish them the best of luck for the upcoming term.

The Student Government is pleased to announce the inauguration of the 2008 Board Members. On Thursday, 10 January 2008 at 6:30 p.m., Sumter Link was sworn in as SGB President alongside Nila Devanath, Lacee Ecker, Ryan Haddad, Amanda Reed, Gary Sanderson, Perry Servedio, Francis Varner, and Ryan Very.
"It is an honor to be your newly elected president," Link said. "This is a wonderful university that provides excellent opportunities to all of its students. I proudly call myself a Pitt student, and I hope this pride will be shown throughout my term as Student Government Board President."
The Student Government Board wishes all past and present Board Members the best of luck in their future, wherever it may take them.

Starting 2 December 2007 and ending 15 December 2007 the Hillman Library will be accessible to all University of Pittsburgh students 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. This service was made possible through funding from the Office of the Provost and thanks to the hard work and vital efforts of the Student Government Board and the Academic Affairs Committee, led by Chairwoman Nila Devanath, who was recently elected to the 2008 term. A valid Pitt I.D. will be required for entry into the Hillman Library during the hours of midnight to 7:00 a.m.
The Student Government Board encourages all students to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to get some excellent studying done for final exams.

The Student Government Board is pleased to announce a new event on campus: I Love Pitt Day, a celebration to promote University pride. The event, co-sponsored with Pitt Program Council, Student Life, and Greek Week, will take place on 4 December 2007 all day. It will end with public office hours with Dean of Students Dr. Kathy Humphrey and the annual Light-Up Night celebration.
Students are invited to help decorate a banner in the Quad to demonstrate Pitt pride. Telefact operators will be participating in the event by testing your Pitt knowledge. Cash prizes will be awarded for winners of the Telefact contest as well as for best costume and other contests. Students who wish to attend will receive free buttons in the morning and free T-shirts in the afternoon around the William Pitt Union.
Remember to wear blue and gold!

Applications for Student Government Board Committee Chair positions are available now. Students interested in becoming a committee chairperson may download the application online in PDF format on the SGB Website or pick them up at the front desk of the SGB office at 839 William Pitt Union. The deadline for all chair positions is 14 January 2008 at 5 p.m., with the exception of the Allocations application, which is due 26 November 2007 at 5 p.m. and only available in the SGB office.
The available chair positions are Academic Affairs, Allocations, Diversity, Elections, Environmental, Freshman Affairs, Governmental Relations, Judicial, Public Relations, and Traditions. The Allocations Committee is also looking for committee members.
The Committees are essential to the continued success of SGB in addressing issues important to the student body. SGB functions and thrives on the efforts of students who administrate a number of SGB programs.

The Student Government Board is pleased to announce the election results for the 2007-2008 school year. Board Member Sumter Link won the election for SGB President against Board Member James Priestas. Also returning to board is Board Member Lacee Ecker, who won reelection. The new Board Members are Academic Affairs Chair Nila Devanath, Public Relations Chair Perry Servedio, as well as Ryan Haddad, Amanda Reed, Gary Sanderson, Francee Varner, and Ryan Very.
The Board Members-elect look forward to pursuing their campaign goals.

The Student Government Board is pleased to announce that USA Today and the New York Times are now available on campus as part of the Collegiate Readership Program.
The pilot program, which ran from 12 March to 6 April of last semester, was extremely well received by the study body and was an immediate success. Students will be able to pick up the newspapers at the following locations around campus: Lothrop Hall, Posvar Hall, Panther Hall, Sutherland Hall, Litchfield Towers and the William Pitt Union.
Students are able to vote until 8 November to express whether or not they support the program. Voting can be done on my.pitt.edu on the SGB Elections tab. Bringing the program to campus adds an additional $2.50 to the spring and fall semester.
On the program, SGB President Henien said:
We are extremely pleased that the program was met with so much enthusiasm when we originally ran it back in March. College students have a responsibility to be both informed and engaged in world issues and this is a great way to go about doing that.
By bringing two national newspapers to campus at an extremely low price, the Student Government Board believes the program will help the student community unite around national and international issues and introduce students to a diverse collection of viewpoints and concerns.

The Student Government Board will hold a presidential debate on 1 November from 7:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. The debate will be televised on UPTV, but refreshments will be provided for students who wish to attend.
The debate will be held to elect the next SGB President for the 2007 - 2008 calendar year. The current SGB President is Shady Henien. The debate is coupled with the appointing of a new Board, which will also take place in December.

Pitt is raising money for cancer research by competing against West Virginia University in a Backyard Brawl Penny War contest from 21 October to 16 November. Collection bins will be in Alumni Hall, Benedum Hall, Amos hall, Bruce Hall and additional locations as they are announced.
Sponsored by Greek Week and SGB traditions, the Penny War will help benefit the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Everyone on campus is invited to show his or her school spirit and participate. The winning school between the will be announced at the Backyard Brawl football game against WVU on 1 December at WVU. The winner will receive a traveling trophy to be used for future contest years.
In a penny war, bins are set out for the participants to accumulate as many pennies as possible. Other denominations of coins or bills will cause a negative score for the team, so it is vital to use only pennies in the competition.

The Denim Drive is still receiving donations for old denim apparel until 31 October. Students may drop off your denim in SRCC 218, WWPH 4100, 840 WPU or in the residence hall lounges.
Denim products are not just limited to jeans and do not have to be in good condition. The denim will be recycled and used to make insulation for houses ravaged by hurricane Katrina.
The drive is sponsored by the Cotton, From Blue to Green program, which assists in helping to rebuild hurricane-ravaged homes in Louisiana. This year, Cotton Incorporated is honored to work with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge to help in the rebuilding of homes for hurricane-affected families and to show how students can make a difference and give back to a community in need.

The University of Pittsburgh Student Government Board is pleased to announce the addition of its newest Board Member, Erin Schaefer. Schaefer was selected by the current Board Members on 9 October 2007. She will be replacing former Board Member Joshua Carl on the Board, who resigned last month. Schaefer was selected by the Board by means of a majority vote after interviews conducted during the most recent Government Board Meeting. Schaefer, who has previously served as Governmental Relations Chair, will begin her work on the Board immediately. The Board looks forward to working with its newest member and expects Schaefer to be a great asset to SGB.

The University of Pittsburgh Student Government Board will be holding its first monthly Town Hall Meeting to address Athletics and Traditions. The meeting will take place on Tuesday 9 October 2007 at 8:45 p.m. in 837 of the William Pitt Union. Issues addressed by Board Members should include concerns of intramural sports and athletic logos as well as advertising, educational issues, and funding and support of student athletic clubs. Board Members will also discuss homecoming, Football Fridays, and various ways to foster a sense of Pitt pride.
SGB encourages all students to attend to voice their concerns and provide ideas for ways to improve athletics at the university.

University of Pittsburgh Student Government Board Members recently spent three days at the conference of the American Student Government Association in Washington, D.C. Board Members met with federal lawmakers and hosted several discussions related to government board management.
The conference, which ran from 27 September to 30 September, gave SGB Members the opportunity to conduct dialogue with other student government bodies from across the country and shares ideas in regards to improving campus life. Board Members intend to bring back what they learned to the University of Pittsburgh campus in order to better improve the college experience for undergraduate students.

The Student Government Board will be holding its weekly meeting on Tuesday 2 October, 2007 at 8:45 p.m. in 837 William Pitt Union. The nine candidates to replace former Board Member Joshua Carl will each be given time to present their respective goals and plans as a future Board Member. Students will then be given time to ask all of the candidates questions regarding their goals as Board Members. The Board will then vote to determine the newest Board Member, who will be chosen based off a majority of votes.
Board Member candidates include Academic Affairs Committee Chair Nila Devanath, Governmental Relations Committee Chair Erin Schaefer, and Public Relations Committee Chair Perry Servedio, as well as Corrie Berk, Lee Every, Cathy Park, Megan Rerko, Gary Sanderson, and Kevin Taylor.

Student Government Board will conduct a campus wide referendum online at www.my.pitt.edu from 9:00 AM, Monday, April 16 through 5:00 PM, Friday April 20 to decide if SGB will establish the Collegiate Readership Program full time at the University of Pittsburgh. A majority of voting students must approve the program in order for SGB to bring the program to campus.
