Welcome from the Chancellor
The University of Pittsburgh in Oakland offers the intellectual, cultural, and social advantages of a vibrant urban environment, as well as the added benefits of a traditional Pittsburgh neighborhood. Pitt and its neighbors—residents and businesses housed in the communities contiguous to the University’s Oakland campus—work closely together to provide safe and clean surroundings in which to live, work, and learn.
You are a member of the Pitt community, and your safety is one of our prime concerns. Today, we live in a culture of heightened security and safety awareness, and it is essential that we practice safety in all aspects of our daily lives. Pittsburgh is fortunate. The city has less of a crime problem than many other areas. Nevertheless, crime is a reality here, as it is in virtually every community, and we continue to work hard to deter criminal activity on campus and to reduce the opportunity for all types of crimes.
At Pitt, we spend more than $11.6 million a year on security. Measures such as safety lights around campus buildings and walkways, an improved shuttle system, and a network of emergency phones create a safer, more accessible, and more secure campus.
Earlier this year, we dedicated our new, state-of-the-art Public Safety Building, which sits on Forbes Avenue, near the entrance to Oakland, and visibly symbolizes our University's broader commitment to its Oakland neighbors, to the city of Pittsburgh, and to the members of our own community of Pitt students, faculty, and staff.
Please keep in mind that safety and crime prevention are shared responsibilities. Use common sense and good judgment as you make your way around campus. Be watchful and alert, and never hesitate to ask for help. Become familiar with the campus resources outlined in this publication, and use these resources to help ensure your own personal safety and contribute to the overall safety of every member of the Pitt community. Thank you for helping to make Pitt’s Oakland campus a safer place for everyone.
