Title: Continuing Education Requirements

Overview: Requirement for Continuing Education Courses




1. To maintain active medical command status, paramedics will be required to:

1.1 Maintain current certification in:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course - complete review course every 2 years
  • Basic Trauma Life Support Course - complete review course every 3 years
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course - complete review course every 2 years

1.2 Successfully complete the Skills Review and Written Protocol exam developed by the Medical Directors as required by the State of Pennsylvania

1.3 Paramedics are individually responsible for ensuring the successful completion of the Pennsylvania continuing education requirements (18 hours / year)

2. Newly hired paramedics will be required to complete the above courses within one year of their hire date.

3. Paramedics unable to successfully complete the practical or written portions of the above courses will be provided with one additional attempt to remediate and to successfully complete the program.

4. Paramedics failing to successfully complete the above courses, exams, or continuing education will lose active command status and will be required to remediate and demonstrate adequate knowledge and skills prior to returning to active patient care.
