Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is charged with maintaining and preserving the 116 state parks; managing the 2.1 million acres of state forest land; providing information on the state's ecological and geologic resources; and establishing community conservation partnerships with grants and technical assistance to benefit rivers, trails, greenways, local parks and recreation, regional heritage parks, open space and natural areas.

 
 

Allegany National Forest

Within the Forest, three unique landscapes comprise some of the most extensive virgin forest in the eastern United States. The 4,131 acres of the Tionesta Scenic and Research Natural Area contain ancient virgin white pine, hemlock, and beech. The Hearts Content Area, a primeval tract of 300-400 year old trees, spans 122 acres.

Conservation is a critical function for the Pennsylvania Chapter, as it is with all of the Sierra Club. Conservation include air quality, biodiversity state forests, and water quality.
