Dr. Maiken Winter with Al Gore

BRADFORD, Pa. – Dr. Maiken Winter of Cornell University, who is a trainee of Al Gore’s Climate Project, will speak at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford about climate change.

Winter’s lecture, “Climate Change: What is it all About?” will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Mukaiyama University Room in the Frame-Westerberg Commons. The talk, which is free and open to the public, is part of the university’s Environmental Studies Perspectives Series.

During her talk, Winter will discuss what causes global warming and what evidence exists to indicate that it’s happening; the effect warming has on global climate, ocean currents, the environment, its wildlife and humans; and what individuals can do to combat climate change.

As a trainee of Al Gore’s Climate Project, Winter will use an altered version of Al Gore’s slide show that was used to produce “An Inconvenient Truth.” According to Winter, the slide show will differ from the movie because it will include the most up-to-date information, some more details on climate effects on birds, and a stronger focus on solutions.

“Climate change is the most serious threat to our planet as we know it today,” Winter said. “Even though more and more people are aware of the crisis ahead, action has not yet been developed strongly enough to divert some of the worst predictions from happening.  We cannot wait for other people to solve this crisis for us, but each of us needs to take action now to prevent the dire forecasts from happening.”
