Teaching Overview:
Through my teaching experiences, I believe that the best educators actively engage with students through in- and out-of-class communication. This communication should take the form of in-class questions that are distributed amongst the students, engaging students that are not actively engaging themselves in discussion; assignments that students must complete periodically with feedback from the instructor offered promptly to correct common negative trends and misconceptions with the class and individuals; and informally to encourage an environment in which students are willing to take chances, make mistakes, and hence ultimately learn.
I have extensive teaching experience. I taught at the Nuclear Power School (NPS) in Charleston, SC (see description and curriculum for more information) for 4 years as an officer in the U.S. Navy. All NPS instructors mast pass a rigorous training program consisting of written and oral examinations (including heat transfer, nuclear physics, mechanical systems, and reactor physics and design). NPS instructors must also pass a series of practice lectures in which technical competence, classroom discipline, and teaching effectiveness are assessed by senior instructors and administrators. I was awarded the title of Master Training Specialist - a Navy honor granted by the Admiral of Naval Training. The Commanding Officer also honored me as Officer Instructor of the Quarter for my sustained excellence in the classroom, my administrative successes as Class Director of 100 officers, and leadership skills demonstrated by leading and implementing a major revision of departmental examinations and homework assignments.
