ENGR 0715 - Engineering Applications for Society

Robert Younger

About me

I am originally from Brooklyn, New York, but I moved to East Stroudsburg, PA for my high
school years. There, I learned the art of waking up at 5:30 in the morning to catch a bus, chasing
away deer from the lawn, and I learned about Pittsburgh Engineering. I'll admit, Pitt wasn't one of
my original choices when I started to think about college. Then again, I'd fully expected to go to a
New York college, hopefully Columbia (which fell flat). In a way, even though my high school years
were less than pleasant I have to thank East Stroudsburgh High School North for making me look
at Pitt seriously, and for block scheduling; without it I would have been stuck in the middle of
the woods for another year (city people do not mix well with the fauna and flora).

Engineering

Engineering wasn't one of my career choices until the end of high school. While I filled out the college applications with engineering being one of my top choices, I wasn't at all committed to it: it looked pretty on paper, I thought. College visits started to change that, as I finally got to see what engineering was about. While I'm still trying to figure out what field is best for me, I'm a lot more confident in being an engineer than, say, a teacher. Or a retailer.

Where am I now?

Getting ready to face Angular Momentum and Coulomb's Law. I'm not so worried about the mental concepts of torque, precession, and the like, mostly because of my yo-yo habits. The issue, I suppose, comes from being able to remember the formulas. This year, I seem to be rejecting any method of formula memorization, and it is getting to be quite frustrating. Naturally, the latest Chemistry test was a massive failure mostly due to this reason. While changing my study habits would appear to be the best choice, I'd like to state that I have done so. Several times. Perhaps I just need to stop studying alone. Perhaps I should down more caffeine so that I don't tend to doze off during morning classes. Perhaps I should stop typing and get back to studying electricity. Whatever the case, Wednesday should prove to be quite interesting.
