History of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF)

1. What is InterVarsity Christian Fellowship?

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is an inter-denominational Christian fellowship that first originated in Cambridge University. It is called InterVarsity not because this fellowship is only for those who are involved in sports but because in those days, Universities were called Varsities. Since two universities joined together to have a fellowship, it became InterVarsity.

Then a student from there was sent to Canada to start a fellowship.

Later on InterVarsity came to the United States. There are about 50 or more IVCF chapters across the nation. They are called IVCF chapters because InterVarsity can be seen as a book. Its headquarters is in Madison, Wisconsin. Every other IVCF across the nation is like a chapter from the book. InterVarsity also has an international movement and is called International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES). The book is never closed cause new chapters keep coming, God willing in different places.

2. What does InterVarsity Christian Fellowship believe in?

Doctrinal Basis
===============

InterVarsity is an evangelical Christian fellowship with the following theological distinctives:

People With a Vision

====================

Ultimately InterVarsity is people gathered around a common faith and vision. While each local InterVarsity is unique, reflecting the personality of its campus setting and student leadership, all of us in InterVarsity share common commitments

1. To build collegiate fellowships characterized by meaningful relationships.

2. To nurture one another in spiritual growth, and

3. To impact our campuses with the gospel of Christ.

Those are our commitments, the values that shape our movement. But it doesn't just happen. There are disciplines, activities, and events planned to help each of us grow personally and belong to the fellowship. Next you can look at the activities that InterVarsity chapters usually sponsor to realize our commitment.

3. What does InterVarsity Christian Fellowship do?

Chapter Meetings

================

When students think of InterVarsity on campus, chapter meetings come to mind. These larger gatherings (called ``Large Group Meetings'') are
typically marked by warm fellowship, worship, and biblical teaching from local ministers, faculty, InterVarsity staff, and community people. On most campuses our Large Group Meetings are the most visible part of our fellowship.

Small Group Bible Studies

=========================

All around campus - in dorms, classrooms and apartments - 5-10 students meet weekly, usually for a semester, to study the Bible. Studies last for approximately an hour and a half and are a great way to make new friends.

Prayer Meetings

===============

At various times and places around campus, students meet together for prayer. These meetings usually last 30 minutes and focus on personal needs as well as concerns for the campus and the world.

Witness

=======

There are many strategies for sharing our faith Jesus Christ: preaching, Bible study, music, friendship - just to name a few. A commitment many of us share in this area is something we call 2+. Put simply, a commitment to pray regularly for two friends who don't know God personally plus pray for regular opportunities to talk to others about Jesus.

Conferences and Training Events

===============================

Besides the many activities and opportunities for growth on campus, our membership in the InterVarsity family makes possible special gatherings with students from campuses. Several times a year students from local chapters in Wisconsin and the Great Lakes join together for dynamic times of worship, training, and fun.
