SUBJECT:    Sloan Pre-Tenure Leave Fellowship Program

I am pleased to announce that we are one of a very few institutions invited by the Sloan Foundation to participate in their Pre-Tenure Leave Fellowship Program. If the program proves successful, the foundation will extend it to other institutions.

The Sloan Pre-Tenure Leave Fellowships will provide funding to untenured, tenure-stream faculty in the fields of mathematics, science, engineering or technology faced with urgent family responsibilities so that they can take a leave with salary or, after a leave, resume research. Such leave could be taken either by choice, such as during a normal pregnancy or following child-birth, or in response to an unexpected crisis requiring special care of a family member. The amount of the Fellowship would be up to $20,000 (to be matched equally by the faculty member's home institution).

I attach a paragraph describing the purpose of the fellowship and an application form. Please note that the application form is in two parts, one to be completed by the applicant and one by the department chair. It is to be returned to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (attention Dr. Ted Greenwood) by the Department Chair. I am requesting that the chair send a copy to this office. I have written to your department chair and to the dean of your school describing this fellowship opportunity.

I remind you of the University's Faculty Medical and Family Leave Policy (02-11-01) which provides for a medical leave with pay for child-birth and a leave for care of dependents of four weeks, and also provides a paid family leave of two weeks. These paid leaves can be used as part of the matching funds required to support the application. .

If you think you are eligible for this fellowship and need some clarification about the application or how to proceed, please contact me or my assistant, Kit Ayars, 624-0246/kit+@pitt.edu.
