SUBJECT: Faculty Appointments, Reappointments, Nonrenewals, Promotions, and Conferrals of Tenure

Having served through several cycles of faculty personnel actions, and given the changes in the University's circumstances since former Provost Rudolph H. Weingartner promulgated his 1988 memorandum which addressed these matters, it seemed timely for me to update the content of Dr. Weingartner's memorandum. Herein, I present the Provost's Office guidelines, effective immediately, for the following faculty personnel actions: appointments, reappointments, nonrenewals, promotions, and conferrals of tenure. Where appropriate and in order to maintain continuity, I have used the specific language of the 1988 memorandum circulated by Dr. Weingartner.

Please make sure that all of the relevant participants in your faculty personnel actions receive a copy of this document. Permit me to close by reiterating the tremendous importance of each and every faculty personnel decision at this key point in the life of our University. This view should be shared widely with our faculty, and together we should be able to advance our common high aspirations.
