Provost's Ad hoc Committee on Academic Freedom

University of Pittsburgh

In response to his own concerns and to concerns expressed by a variety of professors from across campus, Provost James V. Maher has formed the Provost's Ad hoc Committee on Academic Freedom. This committee, formed in consultation with University Senate President James Cassing and including faculty from a range of schools at the University and from key University Senate positions, will consider and advise the Provost on issues concerning academic freedom in higher education, with particular attention to the principle of academic freedom in activities that go beyond traditional campus-based instructional and scholarly endeavors.

Members of the committee include:

Dean John Cooper will serve as chair; Vice Provost Andrew Blair will serve as liaison to the Provost's Office.

The committee will receive its charge at the first meeting. Maher expressed his confidence in receiving "the best possible advice from this committee of highly distinguished colleagues about issues concerning and challenges facing academic freedom."
