Provost's Ad hoc Committee on Academic Freedom

In response to his own concerns and to concerns expressed by a variety of
professors from across campus, Provost James V. Maher has formed the
Provost's Ad hoc Committee on Academic Freedom. This committee, formed in
consultation with University Senate President James Cassing and including
faculty from a range of schools at the University and from key University
Senate positions, will consider and advise the Provost on issues
concerning academic freedom in higher education, with particular attention
to the principle of academic freedom in activities that go beyond
traditional campus-based instructional and scholarly endeavors.

Dean John Cooper will serve as chair; Vice Provost Andrew Blair will serve
as liaison to the Provost's Office.
The committee will receive its charge at the first meeting. Maher
expressed his confidence in receiving "the best possible advice from this
committee of highly distinguished colleagues about issues concerning and
challenges facing academic freedom."
