of Renee Quigley, Intern, Neighborhood Housing Services, 12/06
by Niki Kalemnous
PPW/Writing Center Publicity Intern
Renee
is a senior PPW student and intern at Neighborhood Housing Services.
By joining the PPW certificate program, she hoped to gain an edge
over other Economics and Political Science majors. No matter what
field she decides to enter, Renee feels her strong written communication
skills will be an asset.
With graduation approaching, Renee researched various organizations
and decided to intern with Neighborhood Housing Services. “It
just seemed to be the best fit for me,” she explained. The
goal of this organization is to promote strong and vital neighborhoods
by working to provide opportunities for, eliminate barriers to and
preserve homeownership.
Renee had two major projects while working with NHS. The first was
the newsletter, and the second was assisting with web development
of the Financial Education Consortium web site. She explained that
the work for these two projects was similar but she always changed
gears a few times throughout the week to help with other tasks around
the office. Things were always changing as the needs of the office
changed.
Renee said the biggest challenge of interning at NHS was finding
enough work. “It had a feast or famine theme. Some days I
would be so swamped with tasks that I would continue them when I
went home a night to have them ready for a deadline the next day,
and other days I offered to help the receptionist make phone calls
and send out mailings,” she clarifies.
Renee learned a lot about herself during her time with this organization.
For instance, most projects required her to work independently.
While she appreciated the experience in this kind of work environment,
she realized she prefers to work with people.
Overall, Renee had a positive experience interning with Neighborhood
Housing Services. She admitted it was difficult to balance her time
this semester, yet she knows this will prepare her for the future.
