Guidelines for Submissions

1. Contestants must be registered students in the Public and Professional Writing Certificate Program (contestants who are not already in the program may submit their PPW applications with their contest entries in order to meet this requirement). PPW students may compete in both contests. Multiple submissions are permitted.

2. Documents must have been written to fulfill the requirements for a course at the University of Pittsburgh (including ENGCMP 1900 Internship: PPW) written during the 2008 calendar year (Jan.–Dec.). Documents may be revised before being submitted to the contest.

3. The document must be submitted to the appropriate contest. The Larson O'Brien Prize for Excellence in Professional Writing will go to writing intended for commercial or for-profit settings. The Prize for Excellence in Writing for the Public Interest will go to writing intended for nonprofit settings.

4. Six clean copies of the document should be submitted to Public & Professional Writing Certificate Program, Dept. of English, 526 CL. Please make sure that your name is not on any of the copies (if a memo or letter is part of the project, make sure your name isn't on that document). In addition, attach to each copy a brief description of the rhetorical context for your document (who the audience is, what the document is designed to accomplish, and any other information that would help readers understand your choices as a writer).

5. A cover sheet must be clipped to one copy of the document. Please download the cover sheet in PDF format.

6. The deadline for submissions is February 2, 2009. Projects will be accepted any time between now and the deadline.

7. Errors can cause an otherwise excellent entry to be disqualified. Proofread with special care to make sure that you don't have errors or clumsy sentences in your entry.

Submissions will be judged by a committee of composition faculty. The Larson O'Brien Prize for Excellence in Professional Writing will also be judged by a representative from Larson O'Brien Advertising and PR. Prizes will be awarded at the PPW end-of-term celebration. In addition, winning projects may be posted online.
